Canyoning in Blue MountainsAU
Ancient sandstone plateau 1.5 hours from Sydney, dissected by narrow slot canyons, eucalypt forest, and basalt waterfalls. The Blue Mountains' canyon systems are among Australia's premier technical outdoor experiences — world-class terrain an easy day-trip from a major city.
Why here
The Blue Mountains' sandstone plateau, 1.5 hours west of Sydney, is cut by narrow slot canyons that are genuinely world-class — dark, claustrophobic passages barely wide enough to squeeze through, with filtered light coming from 30m above. Claustral Canyon is the most celebrated: a full-day technical descent involving abseils, swims, and a subterranean section where the only light is what you bring. Empress Canyon and Grand Canyon (the accessible version) offer shorter routes. These canyons are a well-kept Australian secret — you can do a serious canyon experience as a day trip from one of the world's great cities.
Best months
Spring and autumn (September-November, March-May) are ideal — water is manageable and the eucalypt forest is at its most atmospheric. Summer (December-February) works but requires checking for flash flood warnings; severe thunderstorms can develop quickly over the plateau. Winter (June-August) is cold and wet; experienced canyoneers go year-round with appropriate gear. The sandstone holds water well — even in dry spells there are pools and swims in the main routes. Wetsuits are recommended year-round for full-day technical canyons.
Getting there & around
Katoomba (the main base town) is 1.5 hours by train from Sydney Central on the Blue Mountains Line — no car required for guided trips. Operators meet in Katoomba and transport to trailheads. Full-day technical canyons (Claustral, Empress) cost AUD 180-250 per person; half-day accessible routes around AUD 95-140. Book at least a week ahead for technical canyons as group sizes are strictly limited. Australian School of Mountaineering and High n Wild have run these routes for 30+ years.
