It is also the country's best place to find the African painted dog, the endangered wild dog that dens on the Kalahari sand, alongside lion prides, buffalo herds, sable and roan antelope and more than 400 bird species. The park runs on a network of waterholes that concentrate game from July onward, watched from open vehicles, on foot with a licensed guide, or from log-pile hides at the water's edge. Two hours south of Victoria Falls, Hwange pairs naturally with the Falls and with Botswana's Chobe just across the border.
- Mana Pools National ParkJul Aug Sep OctMana Pools is Zimbabwe's UNESCO World Heritage wilderness on the lower Zambezi, a floodplain of winterthorn glades where elephants rear up on their hind legs to feed on high seed pods and where you can walk unfenced among them with a licensed guide. It is one of the last places in Africa you explore on foot and by canoe rather than only by vehicle, drifting the Zambezi channels past hippo, crocodile and drinking buffalo. The park is a stronghold for the endangered African painted dog and for big lion prides, and its dry-season game viewing along the river is exceptional, with the far bank rising into Zambia's escarpment. Mana rewards slow, quiet, self-propelled safari over the convoy kind.

The hills hold one of Africa's densest leopard populations and the highest concentration of Verreaux's black eagles anywhere, hunting the rock hyrax among the kopjes. Matobo is also a cultural landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site scattered with San rock-art shelters thousands of years old and the grave of Cecil Rhodes at World's View. It pairs a genuine on-foot wildlife encounter with deep human history in one compact reserve near Bulawayo.
