Why go
The Harare International Festival of the Arts, HIFA, is Zimbabwe's flagship cultural event and one of the largest international arts festivals in Africa, a six-day programme of theatre, music, dance, fine art and poetry that fills the capital's Harare Gardens and venues. Founded in 1999 by the pianist Manuel Bagorro, it grew into a continental showcase that drew tens of thousands before pausing after its 2018 edition. HIFA returns in 2026 under the theme Up, with Bagorro back as artistic director and a plan to run through 2028. For a few days the city turns into a stage where Zimbabwean artists share billing with acts from across the world, and it is the single best window into the country's contemporary creative life.

What to expect
HIFA runs for six days and is confirmed to return from 3 to 9 August 2026 after an eight-year hiatus, its first winter-season staging, having historically been held in late April or early May. Performances spread across Harare Gardens and city venues day and night, mixing ticketed shows with free stages. August in Harare is dry and mild by day and cold after dark at the city's 1,490-metre altitude. Book tickets and accommodation ahead once the programme is announced.
Getting there & around
Harare has Zimbabwe's main international airport with regional and intercontinental links, and HIFA's core venues cluster around Harare Gardens in the city centre, walkable or a short taxi ride from central hotels. The festival sells single-show tickets and passes through its official channels once the line-up is released. Book rooms early as the city fills during the festival, and arrange airport transfers or ride-hailing rather than walking at night.
