Lome, the seafront capital, holds the state-built Palais de Lome art centre and the vast Akodessewa fetish market, the green hills around Kpalime rise to Mount Agou, and the Kabye heartland of Kara stages the Evala initiation wrestling each July. The Batammariba tower-houses of Koutammakou lie in the far northeast, in a border region under travel advisories, so the settled visitor core runs through the south and centre.

- EvalaKaraJulEvala is one of West Africa's great living rites of passage, a week of traditional wrestling through which young Kabye men pass into adulthood. Each July, in the villages of the Kozah prefecture around Kara, the evalo, young men of initiation age, face off in a series of bouts watched by whole communities, elders and the diaspora returning home. It is far more than sport: the wrestling is a sacred, centuries-old test of strength, courage and endurance that confers adult status and binds the generations of Kabye society. The days fill with drumming, dancing and processions in ceremonial dress, and the government now frames the festival as a pillar of national heritage, with the Prime Minister opening the 2026 edition. For a visitor it is a rare chance to witness an initiation tradition still doing its real work in the community rather than performing for a stage, in a part of Togo few outsiders reach.
- LomeJan Feb Nov DecThe Akodessewa fetish market, the Marche des Feticheurs, is the largest market of its kind in West Africa and the supply house of Vodun across the region. In a dusty compound in a Lome district, stalls are piled with the raw materials of the traditional religion: dried animal heads and skins, skulls, whole birds, bones, herbs, roots and carved talismans. For believers it works as a pharmacy and a hospital of last resort, the place you come when ordinary medicine has failed, to find a charm for fever or fertility, protection or the lifting of a curse. Visits are led by the market's own guides, who explain what the objects are for, and you can sit with a resident priest for a consultation and a blessing. It is confronting and unlike anything in ordinary tourism, a direct encounter with a living belief system that shaped the whole Gulf of Guinea and travelled with the enslaved to the Americas. Approached with respect, it is one of the most memorable stops in Lome.
