Why go
Evala is one of West Africa's great living rites of passage, a week of traditional wrestling through which young Kabye men pass into adulthood. Each July, in the villages of the Kozah prefecture around Kara, the evalo, young men of initiation age, face off in a series of bouts watched by whole communities, elders and the diaspora returning home. It is far more than sport: the wrestling is a sacred, centuries-old test of strength, courage and endurance that confers adult status and binds the generations of Kabye society. The days fill with drumming, dancing and processions in ceremonial dress, and the government now frames the festival as a pillar of national heritage, with the Prime Minister opening the 2026 edition. For a visitor it is a rare chance to witness an initiation tradition still doing its real work in the community rather than performing for a stage, in a part of Togo few outsiders reach.
When it runs
Held each July across the twelve cantons of the Kozah prefecture around Kara, as the Kabye initiation wrestling. The 2026 wrestling ran 11 to 18 July; the 2027 edition is expected in the same mid-July window.

What to expect
Evala is held in July, in the middle of the rainy season in northern Togo, so expect warm, humid days and the chance of heavy showers; the wrestling itself takes place on open village grounds. The bouts spread across the twelve cantons of Kozah over about a week, with a set of climactic days; the 2026 wrestling ran 11 to 18 July. Programmes are confirmed close to the time, so check the official festival source for the exact schedule and venues.
Getting there & around
Kara sits on the N1 about 450 kilometres north of Lome, roughly six to seven hours by road, or a short domestic flight to Niamtougou nearby. Togo is under a US State Department Level 2 Exercise Increased Caution advisory; the far-north Savanes region and areas north of Kande carry Do Not Travel warnings and require special authorisation, but Kara city, south of Kande on the N1, sits outside that zone (as of 2026-07). Book accommodation in Kara well ahead, as Evala fills the city, and travel with a guide who can reach the village grounds.
