Lome is the seafront capital of Togo, spread along the Gulf of Guinea right against the Ghanaian border. A city of wide boulevards, the huge Grand Marche, the Akodessewa fetish market and the restored Palais de Lome art park, it is the country's cultural gateway and its liveliest stretch of coast.
Why here
The Akodessewa fetish market, the Marche des Feticheurs, is the largest market of its kind in West Africa and the supply house of Vodun across the region. In a dusty compound in a Lome district, stalls are piled with the raw materials of the traditional religion: dried animal heads and skins, skulls, whole birds, bones, herbs, roots and carved talismans. For believers it works as a pharmacy and a hospital of last resort, the place you come when ordinary medicine has failed, to find a charm for fever or fertility, protection or the lifting of a curse. Visits are led by the market's own guides, who explain what the objects are for, and you can sit with a resident priest for a consultation and a blessing. It is confronting and unlike anything in ordinary tourism, a direct encounter with a living belief system that shaped the whole Gulf of Guinea and travelled with the enslaved to the Americas. Approached with respect, it is one of the most memorable stops in Lome.
Best months
The market is open year-round; the drier, more comfortable months on the coast run from November to February, and early morning is the calmest time before the day heats up. There is usually a small entry fee and a separate charge for photography, which support the market and its guides. This is a place of real belief, not a curiosity show, so follow your guide, ask before photographing people or stalls, and be prepared for the sight and smell of animal remains.
Getting there & around
The market is in the Akodessewa district of Lome, about a fifteen-minute taxi ride from the city centre, on the settled southern coast far from the northern advisory zones. Agree the taxi fare in advance, and expect to pay the market's entry and photography fees at the gate. Take a market guide rather than exploring alone, both to understand what you are seeing and out of respect for the practitioners. Combine it with the Grand Marche and the Palais de Lome for a full day in the capital.
