Hidden in the folds of Wadi Bani Awf, on the dramatic mountain road between Al Hamra and Rustaq, the canyon squeezes into a slot only a couple of metres wide in places, its water-polished walls curling like a snake. A descent works down through the gorge on rope, sliding down chutes, leaping into deep green plunge pools and swimming the flooded sections in the shade while the desert bakes above. It rewards a head for heights and a willingness to commit to a jump, but the technical climbing is done for you on fixed ropes, so it suits adventurous first-timers with a guide as much as experienced canyoneers. The setting is half the appeal: terraced date gardens at Balad Seet, sheer limestone, and the sudden cold of the water after the heat of the approach. Because the abseils and swims make self-rescue hard, it is a place to go with an operator who carries the ropes and knows the exits. Cooler months from October to April are the season.

The payoff is variety within a short drive: flat, shallow turquoise lagoons on the protected west coast for freestyle and learning, and open ocean swell on the east coast for wave riders, all within about twenty minutes of each other. Because the monsoon also keeps Masirah cooler than the baking mainland, it is one of the rare world-class kite trips that peaks in high summer, exactly when most northern-hemisphere spots go quiet. This is remote, stripped-back kiting: a handful of camps, big empty beaches, nesting turtles on the sand and flamingos in the lagoons, rather than a beach-bar scene. The trade-off for that reliability is strong wind and a long journey in, so it rewards riders who already water-start or who come to log serious hours over a week.

Museums & Galleries

Muscatyear-roundMuscat is the place to make sense of Oman before you head into its deserts and mountains, and it does it through a pair of first-rate museums a few minutes apart in the old walled city. The National Museum of Oman, opened in 2016 opposite the Sultan's Al Alam Palace, is the national showcase: fourteen galleries that run from prehistory and the frankincense and maritime trades to the modern Renaissance, with thousands of objects, immersive displays and Oman's story of empire told in its own voice. A short walk away, Bait Al Zubair is the intimate counterpoint, a private family museum in a cluster of old houses displaying the finest privately held collection of Omani daggers, silver, costume and household life. Between them they cover the sweep and the texture of the culture, and both sit in Old Muscat within reach of the Al Alam Palace, the Portuguese-era forts of Jalali and Mirani and the Mutrah souq. It is an easy, air-conditioned half day that pays off everything you then see out in the country, and it works year-round.

Wahiba SandsJan Feb Mar Apr Oct Nov DecThe Wahiba Sands are the desert most people picture when they think of Arabia, and the easiest world-class dune field to reach on a self-contained overland trip. From the edge town of Bidiyah you drop tyre pressures and drive in over dunes that climb past 100 metres, the sand shifting from pale gold in the morning to deep orange at dusk. This is genuine soft-sand 4WD driving, reading the ridge lines, carrying recovery gear, and camping out where there is no road at all, yet the sands are crossed by Bedouin families who still live and herd camels here, so a night in a desert camp comes with coffee, dates and stories rather than empty wilderness. A typical trip pairs a dune drive with a stay at a Bedouin-run camp, sunrise from a high dune, sandboarding and a camel ride, and for the committed a full south-to-north traverse to the coast at Al Ashkharah. It works best from October to April, when the daytime heat eases and the nights turn cool enough for a fire.

Jebel ShamsJan Feb Mar Apr Oct Nov DecJebel Shams gives Oman its most spectacular walking. The mountain's rim drops sheer into Wadi Ghul, a canyon deep enough to earn the name the Grand Canyon of Arabia, and the classic hike, the Balcony Walk (route W6), threads a ledge partway down the cliff with the void falling away on one side the whole way. It is about four hours there and back over uneven rock, ending at the abandoned terraced village of Sab Bani Khamis tucked under an overhang, where a hidden pool still holds water. There is no summit scramble required and the exposure is manageable, so it suits fit walkers rather than technical mountaineers, yet the drops are real and the path is unfenced. Higher up, the plateau near the summit sits above 2,900 metres and can be bitterly cold, with the occasional dusting of frost in winter. Add village walks between old stone hamlets and terraced fields, and the mountain is a two- or three-day base rather than a single stop. It is best from October to April, when the heat down in the wadis has broken.

Wildlife Safaris

Ras Al JinzJun Jul Aug SepRas Al Jinz is where you watch green turtles come ashore to nest, and it is the only place in Oman you are legally allowed to do it. On the country's far eastern tip, this stretch of coast draws thousands of nesting green turtles every year, heaving up the sand after dark to dig, lay and cover their eggs before hauling back to the sea, while hatchlings from earlier clutches scramble down the beach at dawn. Turtles nest here in every month of the year, so a sighting is close to guaranteed, but numbers peak in the summer, from around June to September. Access is tightly controlled by the government-run reserve: you go in a small group with a ranger, on foot, at dusk or before dawn, with rules on lights and distance that keep the animals undisturbed. Alongside the beach walk there is a serious scientific visitor centre and museum explaining the turtles' biology and the archaeology of this ancient coast. Paired with the old dhow-building town of Sur nearby and the nearby Wadi Shab, it makes the eastern cape a two-day trip rather than a single night.

Salalah Tourism FestivalSalalahJul AugThe Salalah Tourism Festival is the beating heart of the Khareef, the annual monsoon that makes Dhofar the strangest and most beloved season in Arabia. From about mid-July to late August, while the rest of the Gulf bakes past 40C, the south-west monsoon wraps the hills behind Salalah in fog and drizzle, turns them emerald green, sets waterfalls running and holds the temperature in the low 20s. Hundreds of thousands of visitors, most of them from Oman and the neighbouring Gulf, pour into the city, and the festival on the Ittin plain is where the season comes alive after dark: a sprawl of funfair, food stalls, heritage villages, craft markets and nightly concerts and folk performances. It is a family-driven, distinctly Gulf-Arabian spectacle rather than a curated arts festival, and the wider Khareef programme now stacks scores of cultural, sports and heritage events across Dhofar around it. Go for the green hills, the misty coast and camel-dotted pastures by day, and the crowds, music and grilled-corn smoke of the festival by night. There is no ticket gate to the season itself, only the festival grounds.
