The Mountain of the Sun, at just over 3,000 metres the highest peak in Oman and the wider Hajar range. Its summit plateau looks straight down into Wadi Ghul, a 1,000-metre gorge nicknamed the Grand Canyon of Arabia, and the rim carries the country's most famous day hike, the Balcony Walk.
Why here
Jebel Shams gives Oman its most spectacular walking. The mountain's rim drops sheer into Wadi Ghul, a canyon deep enough to earn the name the Grand Canyon of Arabia, and the classic hike, the Balcony Walk (route W6), threads a ledge partway down the cliff with the void falling away on one side the whole way. It is about four hours there and back over uneven rock, ending at the abandoned terraced village of Sab Bani Khamis tucked under an overhang, where a hidden pool still holds water. There is no summit scramble required and the exposure is manageable, so it suits fit walkers rather than technical mountaineers, yet the drops are real and the path is unfenced. Higher up, the plateau near the summit sits above 2,900 metres and can be bitterly cold, with the occasional dusting of frost in winter. Add village walks between old stone hamlets and terraced fields, and the mountain is a two- or three-day base rather than a single stop. It is best from October to April, when the heat down in the wadis has broken.
Best months
Walk from October to April; summer is dangerously hot lower down and the high plateau, above 2,900 metres, is cold on winter mornings with rare frost. The Balcony Walk is a roughly four-hour out-and-back on uneven, unfenced rock with serious exposure in places, so proper footwear, water and an early start matter, and it is not for anyone uneasy with heights or for young children unroped. The trailhead sits at Al Khitaym near the rim. There is no water or shade on the route beyond the pool at the far end, so carry everything in.
Getting there & around
Jebel Shams is about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Muscat, the last stretch a steep graded track that needs a 4WD; most visitors stay a night at one of the simple rim camps or guesthouses near the trailhead. The Balcony Walk needs no permit and is walkable unguided by experienced hikers, but a local guide adds route knowledge, safety and transport for those who would rather not self-drive the mountain road. Nights are cold at altitude, so bring warm layers even in the shoulder seasons.
