Vaduzyear-roundFor a country of forty thousand people, Vaduz packs a remarkable museum mile into a few hundred metres of the pedestrian Stadtle. The anchor is the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, the national museum of modern and contemporary art, a black basalt and tinted-concrete cube opened in 2000, joined in 2015 by the Hilti Art Foundation building next door with its older masters. A short walk away the Liechtenstein National Museum tells the story of the principality itself, from prehistory and the Roman Rhine to the reigning House of Liechtenstein, across a restored historic inn and two adjoining buildings. Between them sit the postage stamp museum and the treasury with princely treasures and Faberge, so a single afternoon on foot covers art, national history and the oddities of the world's sixth smallest state.

Skiing & Snowsports

MalbunJan Feb MarMalbun is the only ski area in Liechtenstein, and that is the charm of it. A single road climbs from the Rhine Valley up past Triesenberg and Steg to a sheltered high bowl at around 1600 metres, where the country learns to ski. The princely children learned here, and the terrain is honest and family sized rather than vast: a handful of lifts serving roughly 23 kilometres of piste that top out near the Sareis ridge at about 2000 metres, with gentle blue runs by the village and steeper reds off the chair. It is a place to actually learn or come back to skiing rather than tick off a mega resort, with short lift queues, a nursery area right in the village, and floodlit sledding and winter walking to fill the afternoons. Snow holds well in the cold north-facing hollow through the heart of winter.

Liechtenstein TrailMay Jun Jul Aug Sep OctThe Liechtenstein Trail, the Liechtenstein-Weg, is the neatest way to see an entire country on foot: 75 kilometres of waymarked path that threads through all eleven municipalities from Balzers in the south to Ruggell in the north. Created for the principality's tercentenary in 2019, it strings together vineyards, the Rhine embankment, forest and hill villages, castles and nature reserves, always with the mountains in view, and breaks naturally into about five day stages plus two circular loops. A free national app, LIstory, marks 148 interactive stations of history and culture along the route, so the walk doubles as a moving museum of the country. It is gentle valley and hill walking rather than high alpine, which makes it an achievable multi-day trek, and local certified guides run it stage by stage for those who want the stories told in person.

VaduzMay Jun Jul Aug Sep OctVaduz sits on one of the warmest wine slopes in the upper Rhine Valley, and the grape here is Blauburgunder, the local name for Pinot Noir, ripened by the warm foehn wind that funnels up the valley. The signature address is the Hofkellerei, the court winery of the reigning Prince, whose four hectare Herawingert vineyard rises right behind the capital and whose cellar in the centre of town runs a public tasting twice a day where you walk in and taste the princely Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A short step away is Harry Zech, the country's first biodynamic and Demeter certified grower, farming small parcels in Vaduz itself. Between a princely estate and a natural winemaker you can taste the full range of a tiny alpine wine country in an afternoon on foot, spirits and gin included.

Liechtenstein National Day (Staatsfeiertag)VaduzAugLiechtenstein's National Day, the Staatsfeiertag, is the one day the whole principality turns out, and for once the reigning family opens its doors. Held every 15 August, it starts with a formal state ceremony on the castle meadow below Vaduz Castle, where the Hereditary Prince and the President of Parliament address the country, followed by a reception in the castle rose garden hosted by the Princely Family. Down in the capital the pedestrian Stadtle fills with a public fair, food and craft stands, a guest municipality procession, stage entertainment and children's programmes through the afternoon and evening, building to a hillside bonfire, a torchlit procession and a large fireworks display over Vaduz at around ten at night. It is a civic celebration you join by turning up, not a ticketed show, and the most Liechtenstein day of the year.
