Why go
Liechtenstein's National Day, the Staatsfeiertag, is the one day the whole principality turns out, and for once the reigning family opens its doors. Held every 15 August, it starts with a formal state ceremony on the castle meadow below Vaduz Castle, where the Hereditary Prince and the President of Parliament address the country, followed by a reception in the castle rose garden hosted by the Princely Family. Down in the capital the pedestrian Stadtle fills with a public fair, food and craft stands, a guest municipality procession, stage entertainment and children's programmes through the afternoon and evening, building to a hillside bonfire, a torchlit procession and a large fireworks display over Vaduz at around ten at night. It is a civic celebration you join by turning up, not a ticketed show, and the most Liechtenstein day of the year.

What to expect
A single day, 15 August, every year, centred on Vaduz Castle meadow and the Stadtle in the capital. The state ceremony is late morning, the fair and stage run through the afternoon, and the fireworks are at about 22:00. Entry to the grounds and street events is free. August in the Rhine Valley is warm; the evening by the river can cool, so bring a layer for the fireworks.
Getting there & around
Vaduz has no railway station; arrive by bus from Sargans, Buchs or Feldkirch, or by car and park at the edge of town, as the Stadtle is pedestrianised and busy on the day. The castle meadow ceremony and the town-centre fair are within a short walk of each other. Accommodation in and around Vaduz is limited and fills for National Day, so book well ahead.
