A 75 kilometre waymarked walking route that links all eleven municipalities of Liechtenstein, running the length of the principality from the Rhine terraces and vineyards to forest, castle and village, walkable in about five stages over two to five days.
Why here
The Liechtenstein Trail, the Liechtenstein-Weg, is the neatest way to see an entire country on foot: 75 kilometres of waymarked path that threads through all eleven municipalities from Balzers in the south to Ruggell in the north. Created for the principality's tercentenary in 2019, it strings together vineyards, the Rhine embankment, forest and hill villages, castles and nature reserves, always with the mountains in view, and breaks naturally into about five day stages plus two circular loops. A free national app, LIstory, marks 148 interactive stations of history and culture along the route, so the walk doubles as a moving museum of the country. It is gentle valley and hill walking rather than high alpine, which makes it an achievable multi-day trek, and local certified guides run it stage by stage for those who want the stories told in person.
Best months
The trail is best walked from about May to October when the paths are clear of snow; the higher circular loops open later. It is signed with red and blue Liechtenstein-Weg posts and is mostly moderate valley, vineyard and forest walking with some hill climbs, suited to reasonably fit walkers rather than technical mountaineers. Stages average three to five hours; the country's compact size means towns, buses and cafes are never far off the route.
Getting there & around
The trail runs the length of the country and is easy to walk self-guided using the dense Liechtenstein bus network to reach the start of each stage and return each evening, so no camping is needed. Base in Vaduz or one of the valley towns and day-hike the stages, or engage a local certified hiking guide for company and the history along the way.
