Today the island holds the remnants of that early settlement, memorial markers, old trading structures and a cultural centre, reached by a short boat crossing or causeway from central Monrovia. Visited with a guide who can tell the story straight, it is a compact, powerful counterpart to the slave forts of the wider region, the arrival side of the diaspora rather than the departure.
