Providence Island is where Liberia began. In 1822 the first ships of freed and formerly enslaved African Americans, sent back across the Atlantic under the American Colonization Society, made their first landing here on this island in the Mesurado River, and from this foothold grew the settlement that became Monrovia and the republic of Liberia, Africa's first. The island is a place of layered meaning, a homecoming and a founding, but also the meeting point of the returnees and the indigenous peoples whose land this was, a tension that runs through Liberian history to this day. Today the island holds the remnants of that early settlement, memorial markers, old trading structures and a cultural centre, reached by a short boat crossing or causeway from central Monrovia. Visited with a guide who can tell the story straight, it is a compact, powerful counterpart to the slave forts of the wider region, the arrival side of the diaspora rather than the departure. Providence Island is an open-air heritage site in central Monrovia, visited year-round, though the November to April dry season is the most comfortable for walking the grounds; the May to October rains are heavy. The site is compact and can be seen in an hour or two, best with a guide who can explain the settlement history and the monuments, since interpretation on site is limited. It is reached from central Monrovia by a short crossing or the causeway. This is a reflective historical visit rather than a leisure attraction.
