While wheel-thrown folk ceramics faded elsewhere, the lake district of the south-east kept a living line of potters working the local red clay into glazed candlesticks, whistles and vessels, and above all the region's signature black ware, fired in a reduction kiln that starves the clay of oxygen and turns it a deep smoked grey-black. The tradition is written into the Latvian Culture Canon. You can throw and fire your own piece with a working master: at the Daugavpils Clay Art Centre, a municipal workshop for a dozen potters, or in Kraslava with a heritage-marked family studio. This is craft learned at the wheel from people who fire the way their grandparents did, not a souvenir demonstration.

Rigayear-roundLatvian food is a forager's larder, and Riga is where you learn to read it. Start at the Central Market, one of the largest in Europe, housed in five vast pavilions built from repurposed First World War Zeppelin hangars and part of Riga's UNESCO-listed centre. Its stalls are a crash course in the national pantry: rye bread and grey peas, smoked Baltic fish, forest mushrooms and berries, curd cheese and fermented everything. The market runs its own guided tours and tastings, and a short walk away you can cook the ingredients yourself in a Riga home kitchen with a Latvian family, turning grey peas with bacon, cold beetroot soup and the Latgalian carrot pastry sklandrausis into a meal you take home the recipes for.

Rigayear-roundRiga holds the whole span of Latvian art within a short walk. The Latvian National Museum of Art, in a restored 1905 building on Jana Rozentala laukums, lays out the national story from the end of the eighteenth century to the end of the twentieth across its main galleries and underground halls. A few minutes south, near the Central Market, Zuzeum shows the Zuzans Collection, the largest private hoard of Latvian art in the world, from early modernism to nonconformist and contemporary work. Between the two you get the official canon and its private, edgier counter-collection, both with English-language material and neither swamped by crowds. Step outside and the city itself is a museum: the Alberta iela quarter carries the densest run of Art Nouveau facades in Europe.

Nationwide Latvian Song and Dance CelebrationRigaJun JulThe Nationwide Latvian Song and Dance Celebration is the emotional core of the country, a mass festival that gathers around 40,000 singers, dancers and folk musicians from more than 1,600 groups roughly every five years in Riga. It runs for a week over the turn of June into July, moving through processions in the streets, a huge dance display at the Daugava stadium and, at its climax, a massed choir of tens of thousands singing together at the Mezaparks open-air bandstand as the audience joins in. The tradition, shared with Lithuania and Estonia, was proclaimed a UNESCO Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage in 2003. This is a small nation that sang its way out of Soviet rule doing the thing that defines it. The next celebration, the twenty-eighth, is set for 30 June to 9 July 2028, after the 150th-anniversary edition in 2023.

SiguldaApr May Jun Jul Aug Sep OctThe Gauja valley around Sigulda is the best walking in a country that is mostly flat. Over roughly an hour from Riga you reach a broad forested gorge where the river has exposed Devonian red-sandstone cliffs, and trails drop from the plateau to the water and climb the far side between three castles: the ruined Sigulda medieval castle, Krimulda across the valley, and Turaida with its restored red-brick tower. Along the way is Gutmanis Cave, the largest grotto in the Baltics, its walls carved with centuries of inscriptions. It is a day of caves, cliffs, cable-car and castle ruins rather than summits, walkable in every season, with the autumn colour in the beech and oak forest as the reason many Latvians come.

Cape KolkaApr May Aug Sep OctCape Kolka is one of the finest migration watchpoints in Europe. Where the Gulf of Riga narrows to a point before the open Baltic, birds crossing the water are funnelled over the sandspit in extraordinary numbers: on the best April mornings more than 100,000 birds pass the cape, a river of finches, thrushes, pipits, cranes, geese and raptors moving low over the beach and the pines. Offshore the sea holds long-tailed ducks, scoters, goldeneye and the scarce Steller's eider, while the old-growth forest and bog of Slitere National Park behind the cape hold seven species of woodpecker, six of owl and raptors including the lesser-spotted eagle. Spring is the spectacle and autumn the quieter return, both best watched at dawn from the cape with a local guide and a telescope.
