The south-eastern region of Latvia, a lake-strewn borderland with Lithuania, Belarus and Russia that is the heartland of Latvian Catholic and Old Believer culture and of Latgalian pottery, a distinct ceramic tradition of wood-fired black and glazed ware centred on Daugavpils, Kraslava and the villages around Preili and Rezekne.
Why here
Latgale is where Latvia's pottery never died. While wheel-thrown folk ceramics faded elsewhere, the lake district of the south-east kept a living line of potters working the local red clay into glazed candlesticks, whistles and vessels, and above all the region's signature black ware, fired in a reduction kiln that starves the clay of oxygen and turns it a deep smoked grey-black. The tradition is written into the Latvian Culture Canon. You can throw and fire your own piece with a working master: at the Daugavpils Clay Art Centre, a municipal workshop for a dozen potters, or in Kraslava with a heritage-marked family studio. This is craft learned at the wheel from people who fire the way their grandparents did, not a souvenir demonstration.
Best months
The studios run hands-on classes year-round and are indoor, so this is a strong cold-weather and off-season choice. Black-firing in an open reduction kiln is done on set days or by arrangement, so ask ahead if you want to see or take part in a firing rather than only throwing. Sessions are small and usually need booking a few days in advance.
Getting there & around
Latgale is the far south-east of Latvia; Daugavpils is about three hours from Riga by train or road, and Kraslava a further 45 minutes on. The studios are spread across the region, so a car helps if you want to combine several. Book classes ahead as they are small and the potters also work to commission.

Daugavpils Clay Art Centre
OrganizerThe Daugavpils Clay Art Centre is a municipal pottery centre on 18. novembra iela in Daugavpils. It is a working studio for about eleven potters, with three workshops running master classes and demonstrations alongside a permanent exhibition. It is the only place in Latvia showing hardened Baltic raku ceramics matured in fermented rye-flour liquid, and visitors can throw and fire their own pieces. It has no standalone website and is reached through the Daugavpils museum.
Paulins Ceramics
SchoolPaulins Ceramics is the workshop of the potters Valdis and Olga Paulins at the Kraslava Crafts Centre on Pils iela in Kraslava, deep in Latgale. Guests follow the whole process from clay to firing and can try the wheel, including the region's black-ceramics reduction technique. In 2014 the workshop received the Latviskais mantojums, or Latvian Heritage, mark that certifies genuine traditional craft. Visits and classes are by request; the studio has no site of its own.
