Wildlife Safaris in Cape Kolka
The northern tip of Latvia's Courland peninsula, where the shallow Gulf of Riga meets the open Baltic in a shifting line of sandbars and driftwood beach. Backed by the pine forest and coastal bog of Slitere National Park, the cape funnels one of Europe's great songbird and seabird migrations each spring.
Why here
Cape Kolka is one of the finest migration watchpoints in Europe. Where the Gulf of Riga narrows to a point before the open Baltic, birds crossing the water are funnelled over the sandspit in extraordinary numbers: on the best April mornings more than 100,000 birds pass the cape, a river of finches, thrushes, pipits, cranes, geese and raptors moving low over the beach and the pines. Offshore the sea holds long-tailed ducks, scoters, goldeneye and the scarce Steller's eider, while the old-growth forest and bog of Slitere National Park behind the cape hold seven species of woodpecker, six of owl and raptors including the lesser-spotted eagle. Spring is the spectacle and autumn the quieter return, both best watched at dawn from the cape with a local guide and a telescope.
Best months
Spring migration peaks in April and early May, when calm, clear dawns after an overnight southerly can bring the biggest passage; autumn return runs August to October. The forest and bog species can be found through spring and summer. Kolka is exposed and cold at dawn even in spring, so bring windproof layers. A telescope, or a guide who carries one, makes the difference at the cape.
Getting there & around
Cape Kolka is about three hours by road from Riga along the Courland coast; there is no rail and buses are sparse, so a car or a guided trip is the practical way in. Accommodation is in guesthouses in Kolka and along the Slitere coast. Guided birding trips supply telescopes and know the dawn watchpoints and the forest sites in Slitere National Park.
