Wadi MujibMar Apr Oct NovWadi Mujib is a categorically different experience from European technical canyoning, a wade-and-swim descent through a narrow basalt gorge, where the Mujib River drops 900 metres to the Dead Sea over 70km. The RSCN (Royal Society for Conservation of Nature) manages access as part of the Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve, keeping numbers controlled and the experience genuine. The Siq Trail (the main route) involves boulder-hopping, swimming through slots barely wide enough for a person, and following rope lines through waterfall drops, ending at the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth. No abseiling or technical gear required; swimming ability and a tolerance for cold water are all you need.

Ammanyear-roundAmman is where you learn Levantine home cooking at the source: mansaf, Jordan's national dish of lamb in fermented jameed yogurt, maqluba flipped at the table, and the full architecture of mezze. Beit Sitti created the country's cook-and-dine category in 2010, when three sisters started teaching in their grandmother's 1930s stone house in Jabal al-Weibdeh, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods; classes are hands-on, taught by local women, and end with the meal eaten on a terrace overlooking the downtown hills. The name means my grandmother's house, and that is the register the whole scene works in. Downtown's markets, Palestinian and Syrian influences, and a serious hummus-and-falafel canon fill the days between classes.

Operations sit under the Royal Aero Sports Club of Jordan, the kingdom's official air-sports body, and a flight runs 50 to 60 minutes drifting over jebels, dune corridors, and Bedouin camps waking below. Compared with the balloon conveyor belts elsewhere, mornings here often put just one or two envelopes in the sky.

Language Immersion

Ammanyear-roundAmman is arguably the leading city in the world for serious Arabic study. Stable and safe, with a Jordanian dialect close to Modern Standard Arabic, it inherited much of the student flow that once went to Damascus and Cairo, and its institutes matured accordingly. Qasid Arabic Institute is the sector's benchmark, with dual Classical and MSA tracks on a purpose-built campus that feeds university and government programs. Sijal Institute pairs MSA-plus-dialect coursework with films, lectures, and cultural programming from a historic villa off Rainbow Street. Jerash Festival for Culture and ArtsJerashJul AugFounded in 1981 under Queen Noor, the Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts is one of the Arab world's largest cultural events, and its stage is a 2,000-year-old Roman city. Headline Arab stars sing in the South Theatre while the colonnaded streets of ancient Gerasa host folklore troupes, craft markets, and heritage programming, drawing crowds around 150,000 across the run. The 40th edition in 2026 spans more than 200 events across 15-plus locations. Hearing Arabic music's biggest names inside a functioning Roman theatre is the category-defining version of this experience, and per-concert tickets keep it cheap.

Rock Climbing

Wadi RumMar Apr May Oct NovWadi Rum's sandstone walls rise up to 500m from the desert floor, and the climbing here is its own genre. Bedouin routes, the bold hunting lines the Zalabia Bedouin pioneered to reach ibex on the summits, were catalogued by Tony Howard and Di Taylor from 1984 onward and still define the place: long, adventurous, route-finding-heavy outings closer in spirit to pre-war Dolomites climbing than to any bolted crag. Jebel Rum carries trad classics like Pillar of Wisdom, and the traverse of Jebel Um Ishrin strings canyon, slab, and summit into a single huge day. Guiding remains Bedouin-local by tradition rather than IFMGA-certified, which is part of the character; the good operators are village-based and know the rock the way their grandfathers did.

Scuba Diving

The 74m freighter Cedar Pride, scuttled in the mid-1980s at the initiative of then-Prince Abdullah, lies coral-covered at around 25m with resident seahorses. A C-130 Hercules sits intact on the sand nearby, and since 2019 the Underwater Military Museum has lined up tanks, armored carriers, and a combat helicopter in battle formation on the seabed. The fringing reefs along South Beach sit inside the protected Aqaba Marine Reserve, water stays warm enough to dive comfortably in any month, and prices undercut the Egyptian resorts across the gulf.

Trekking / Hiking

DanaMar Apr Oct NovDana to Petra is Region 6 of the 675km Jordan Trail and widely cited as the Middle East's finest multi-day walk: 72 to 80 kilometers over four to five days from the stone village above Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan's largest nature reserve, through Wadi Malaga and Little Petra, entering Petra itself through the back door. The route drops and climbs through sandstone canyons and Bedouin grazing country, camps are wild and supported, and the finish line is a World Heritage city you walk into rather than queue for. The Jordan Trail Association stewards the route and runs an annual guided spring thru-hike; the trail itself is free to walk.

PetraMar Apr May Sep Oct NovPetra by Night is one of travel's canonical night rituals: walking the 1.2km Siq by the light of some 2,000 candles to find Al-Khazneh, the Treasury, glowing at the canyon's end. It has run since 1998 and was relaunched in May 2025 with projection mapping and narration layered over the original candlelit walk. It is the only sanctioned way to be inside Petra after dark, and it changes the scale of the place: the crowds thin to a seated hush below the facade, and the canyon walls do the rest. Pair it with a full day inside the site, because the ticket requires one anyway.
