TbilisiDecThe Tbilisi International Film Festival has run since 2000 at the Amirani Cinema, staged by Cinema Art Center Prometheus, the arthouse operation behind the capital's two historic cinemas, with its Georgian Panorama section serving as the annual census of a national new wave that keeps winning European festivals outsized to the country's size. Editions run about a week each early December, the 26th closing December 7, and the festival has held its dates through funding fights that would have folded softer institutions. Georgian cinema from Ioseliani to the current generation is one of Europe's great under-watched bodies of work; this is where it screens at home.

Horse Riding / Equestrian

TushetiJul Aug SepTusheti is Georgia's horseback country by necessity as much as tradition: the region hides behind the 2,850-meter Abano Pass on one of the world's most notorious roads, open roughly June to September, and Tush horsemen still move flocks over three-thousand-meter passes the way their grandfathers did. Multi-day rides link the tower villages of Omalo, Dartlo, and Diklo via the Nakaicho Pass at about three thousand meters, guesthouse nights included, run by local families and Tbilisi outfits alike, seven-day expeditions from around 1,390 euros. It is transhumance country ridden at working pace, the closest Europe gets to Mongolia.

Motorcycle Adventure Touring

TbilisiApr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Georgia packs an extraordinary amount of riding terrain into a small country. The Military Highway north from Tbilisi climbs to the Cross Pass at 2,379m before dropping into Kazbegi, where the Gergeti Trinity Church sits on a ridge above 2,000m with the Caucasus range behind it. From Tbilisi you can also ride west to Kutaisi and the Black Sea coast, south through the cave city at Vardzia, and east into the Kakheti wine country. Few countries in the world give you this variety within a day's ride of the capital. Rental infrastructure has grown substantially in recent years and guided tour companies cover most circuits.

Mountaineering / Summits

KazbegiJun Jul Aug SepMount Kazbek, 5,047 meters of glaciated dormant volcano, is the most-climbed five-thousander in the Caucasus, and the town of Stepantsminda at 1,740 meters under the Gergeti Trinity Church is its base: guided ascents run four to eight days up the Gergeti Glacier via the Betlemi Hut area at about 3,650 meters. The route is non-technical but serious, glacier travel, crevasse risk, and sustained altitude, guided at one-to-three ratios by IFMGA and Georgian-certified guides with packages from around 930 euros, including operators running their own lodge at 3,020 meters and a base-camp cafe that must be the highest flat white in Georgia. For many climbers it is the first real five-thousander, and the right one.

Tbilisiyear-roundThe Simon Janashia Museum on Rustaveli Avenue, founded 1852 and flagship of the Georgian National Museum's network of some twenty institutions, holds the country's showstopper: the Archaeological Treasury of more than six hundred pieces of Georgian goldsmithing from the third millennium BC to the fourth century AD, including the Colchian gold of Vani that gives the Golden Fleece myth its receipts. Down the same avenue, the privately founded Georgian Museum of Fine Arts, opened 2018, hangs over three and a half thousand works from the last seventy years of Georgian art, Pirosmani's heirs through the Soviet underground. One boulevard, five millennia, ten lari at the door.

Paragliding

GudauriJan Feb Mar Jun Jul Aug SepGudauri is the Caucasus's biggest tandem paragliding hub, and the signature product is the winter flight: launching from sites between 2,100 and 3,006 meters over the Cross Pass, pilots soar above the ski area's white bowls with the Military Highway switchbacking below, a view no lift ticket buys. Flights run seven to fifty minutes with 200 to 500 meters of thermal gain in summer, priced at a few hundred lari, and the established operators fly licensed pilots only, the leading outfit's chief instructor carrying over nine thousand flight hours and 6,700 tandems. Year-round flying in high-mountain air, an hour and a half from a capital city, is a rare combination.

SvanetiJun Jul Aug Sep OctThe Mestia-Ushguli trek is Georgia's classic: four days and about fifty-eight kilometers through Upper Svaneti's medieval tower villages, UNESCO World Heritage since 1996, crossing the Chkhunderi Pass via Zhabeshi and Adishi to finish in Ushguli at around 2,100 meters, among Europe's highest permanently inhabited villages, beneath the 5,193-meter wall of Shkhara. The format is guesthouse to guesthouse, Svan salt on every table, and daily stages a fit walker handles without expedition logistics. Local Mestia outfits run it guided from around $570, with day-hike alternatives to the Chalaadi Glacier and Koruldi Lakes for shorter stays.

Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting

Aragvi ValleyMay Jun Jul Aug SepThe Aragvi's branches at Pasanauri, an hour up the Military Highway from Tbilisi, are the capital's home whitewater: Class II-III water over ten-to-twelve-kilometer runs, the classic Pasanauri-to-Meneso descent taking about two hours, with the season running April to October and snowmelt peak flow through midsummer. Georgia's oldest rafting club, founded 2003, runs a full basecamp on the Pshavi Aragvi with a rope park and seven ziplines bolted on, while the Pasanauri camps put IRF level-three certified instructors on daily departures from about forty lari. It is the easiest whitewater day trip in the Caucasus, and the water is straight off the Gudauri snows.

Wine / Spirits Education

KakhetiMay Jun Sep OctGeorgia is the oldest continuously producing wine culture on earth, roughly eight thousand vintages deep, and Kakheti is its engine room: about seventy percent of Georgian wine comes from this one valley, drawn from a national catalogue of some five hundred indigenous grapes led by Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, and Kisi. The method is the draw, wine fermented and aged in buried clay qvevri, inscribed by UNESCO in 2013 and never abandoned here even through Soviet industrialization. Natural-wine pioneers in Sighnaghi pour at the source with supra dinners attached, German-Georgian estates near Telavi add cellar hotels and wine spas, and the September-October rtveli harvest takes visiting hands seriously.

TbilisiSep OctTbilisoba is the capital's city day, held every autumn since 1979, and it is the harvest festival a wine country's capital deserves: over two hundred thousand people fill Rike Park, Orbeliani Square, and Old Tbilisi for churchkhela stalls, new-wine pours from the rtveli just in, open-air concerts, and regional pavilions where every Georgian province cooks its argument. The city awards honorary citizenship during the festival, and satsivi steam and saperavi fumes settle over the old town for a weekend. The 2025 edition ran September 20-21; dates land each year in late September or the first weekend of October.
