What the ash preserved is astonishing, houses and kitchens with pots still holding food, a communal steam bath, storerooms, gardens and painted gourds, a level of daily-life detail that stone-built ruins almost never keep. It is the reason the site became El Salvador's only UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed in 1993, and why it is nicknamed the Pompeii of the Americas. Raised walkways lead you over the excavated structures under protective roofs, and a small on-site museum lays out the recovered artefacts and explains how archaeologists read a household's life from what the volcano kept. The trail starts high in Los Volcanes National Park, near the Cerro Verde lookout, and climbs through cloud forest and open lava fields to the 2,381-metre rim in around ninety minutes to two hours. At the top the crater drops to a milky turquoise lake, its colour set by dissolved sulphur and minerals, sometimes steaming and occasionally rumbling; this is an active volcano that last erupted in 2005. The panorama takes in the perfect cone of Izalco next door, forested Cerro Verde, and the wide blue circle of Lake Coatepeque in its own collapsed caldera below. The hike itself is manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness, and national-park rules require a guide on the mountain, which keeps groups organised and safe on the exposed upper slopes.
