Thousands gather here between January and April to mate and calve, and the Dominican Republic protects the bank as a marine mammal sanctuary, capping access to three permitted vessels and enforcing a soft, passive-encounter rule: you snorkel at the surface, you do not chase, and you let the whales decide. Curious calves, singing males and mothers resting with newborns all pass within metres. This is a breath-hold, surface-snorkel experience rather than a deep freedive, and no scuba is allowed, which is exactly what keeps it calm for both whales and people. It is a week-long liveaboard trip out of Puerto Plata, small tenders ferrying guests to the animals.

Kitesurfing

Around the Plaza de Espana and Calle Las Damas, the oldest paved street in the Americas, sit the palace of Christopher Columbus's son and the building that housed the first Spanish colonial government. Inside are viceregal furniture, colonial arms, maps and paintings that trace the island's role as Spain's first foothold in the New World. The whole quarter is compact and walkable, a UNESCO-listed grid of 16th-century stone that also holds the first cathedral and fortress of the Americas. The museums are run by the national museum network, so a short walk links several of them in an afternoon.

Dominican Republic Jazz FestivalCabareteOct NovThe Dominican Republic Jazz Festival turns the north coast into an open-air stage for a long weekend each year. Founded around 2004 and among the oldest jazz festivals in the Caribbean, it stages free and ticketed concerts on the beach at Cabarete and across Sosua, Puerto Plata and Santiago, mixing Grammy and Latin Grammy winners with Dominican players. It is run by FEDUJAZZ, an education foundation whose proceeds pay for tuition-free music lessons for local children, and the festival week doubles as a set of open workshops in Sosua where those students play alongside visiting artists. Concerts on the sand at sunset, with the trade wind dropping, are the signature image.

Scuba Diving

The signature dive is the St. George, a 73-metre freighter sunk on purpose in 1999 that now sits upright in around 40 metres, draped in sponges and patrolled by barracuda. Short boat rides reach the wall and coral gardens off Catalina Island, the shallow reefs around Saona inside Cotubanama National Park, and cavern dives in the area's flooded limestone. Water is warm year-round and the protected south-coast sites often have little current, which makes this a good place to train as well as to log easy fun dives. Two long-running, owner-led centres anchor the village.

Surfing

Along a short stretch of reef sit separate peaks, gentle whitewater and sand-bottom sections for first-timers at one end, and punchy right and left reef breaks like Bobo's, Coco Pipe and La Izquierda for intermediates and up. The wind stays offshore in the mornings before the afternoon trade wind arrives and hands the water over to the kitesurfers down in Cabarete, so surfers start early. It works most of the year, with the biggest, most consistent swell from roughly November to April. The water is warm enough for boardshorts, the schools cluster right at the beach, and Cabarete's food and nightlife are ten minutes away.

Trekking / Hiking

Pico DuarteJan Feb Mar Apr Nov DecPico Duarte is the roof of the Caribbean, a 3,087-metre summit that surprises people who think of the Dominican Republic as only beaches. The standard climb leaves from La Cienaga near Jarabacoa, a two-day walk up through pine forest to the high camp at Comparticion, then a pre-dawn push to the summit for sunrise above the clouds. The Cordillera Central is cool and green, with river crossings, ferns and the burnt-pine paramo near the top, and nights at altitude drop below freezing. Park rules require a licensed local guide and mules carry the gear, so this is a supported trek rather than a solo scramble. Longer routes add the Tetero Valley or link the neighbouring peaks of La Pelona and La Rusilla.

Samana Humpback Whale SeasonSamanaJan Feb MarFor about ten weeks each winter, Samana Bay fills with humpback whales that have swum down from the North Atlantic to breed. From a boat you watch males breach and slap, escort groups jostle, and mothers move slowly with new calves, all within a protected bay a short ride from the town dock. This is the accessible counterpart to the Silver Bank: no liveaboard, no week at sea, just a morning trip from Santa Barbara de Samana with a marine mammal specialist reading the behaviour for you. The commercial whale watch here was invented in 1983 and the bay is now a regulated sanctuary zone, with boats holding to set distances and rotation so the animals are not crowded.
