Why go
For about ten weeks each winter, Samana Bay fills with humpback whales that have swum down from the North Atlantic to breed. From a boat you watch males breach and slap, escort groups jostle, and mothers move slowly with new calves, all within a protected bay a short ride from the town dock. This is the accessible counterpart to the Silver Bank: no liveaboard, no week at sea, just a morning trip from Santa Barbara de Samana with a marine mammal specialist reading the behaviour for you. The commercial whale watch here was invented in 1983 and the bay is now a regulated sanctuary zone, with boats holding to set distances and rotation so the animals are not crowded.
When it runs
Annual humpback whale season in Samana Bay, roughly 15 January to the end of March each year, peaking in February. Not a fixed-date event; the whales arrive and depart on their migration.

What to expect
The whales are present from mid-January to late March, with peak numbers in February. Trips are boat-based watching, not in-water, and run in the morning when the bay is calmest. Operators work under sanctuary rules that limit boat numbers and set minimum distances. Sea conditions vary, so bring layers and something for motion sickness.
Getting there & around
Boats leave from the main dock in Santa Barbara de Samana, reachable by road from Las Terrenas, Punta Cana or Santo Domingo, or by a domestic flight to El Catey. Book ahead in February, the busiest weeks, and choose a morning departure. The season is short and weather-dependent, so allow a spare day.
Where it happens
Samana, Dominican Republic.
