Surfing in Playa Encuentro
A reef-fringed beach a few kilometres west of Cabarete on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, and the island's premier surf spot. Several distinct reef breaks along one bay serve beginners through advanced surfers, with warm water year-round.
Why here
Playa Encuentro packs a whole surf coast into one bay. Along a short stretch of reef sit separate peaks, gentle whitewater and sand-bottom sections for first-timers at one end, and punchy right and left reef breaks like Bobo's, Coco Pipe and La Izquierda for intermediates and up. The wind stays offshore in the mornings before the afternoon trade wind arrives and hands the water over to the kitesurfers down in Cabarete, so surfers start early. It works most of the year, with the biggest, most consistent swell from roughly November to April. The water is warm enough for boardshorts, the schools cluster right at the beach, and Cabarete's food and nightlife are ten minutes away.
Best months
Encuentro breaks over reef, so booties help and beginners should go with a school that knows the safe zones. Mornings are cleanest, with offshore wind before the afternoon thermal builds. Peak swell season is about November to April; summer is smaller and friendlier for learners. Separate peaks along the bay mean you can match the wave to your level.
Getting there & around
Encuentro is about a 10-minute drive or motoconcho ride west of Cabarete, which has the widest choice of places to stay and eat. Schools on the beach include the board, and most run early sessions to catch the offshore morning window. Puerto Plata airport is around 30 minutes away.

SchoolA family-run surf school on Playa Encuentro, opened in October 2022 by Victor, a Dominican surfer, and Elizabeth from Quebec. Lessons cover first-timers through advanced surfers and include the board, leash, shoes and rashguard, with multi-day packages of three to ten days for people building a whole trip around the wave. The school times sessions to the tide and the offshore morning window, and works across the bay's different reef peaks by level.

Sessions range from first-time lessons to coaching and surf guidance for people learning to read the reef breaks on their own, with boards available to rent. The name comes from the Hawaiian idea of the time after work, and the school has held the top spot among Cabarete surf classes on TripAdvisor.
