Why go
The Goroka Show is the largest and most celebrated cultural gathering in Papua New Guinea, drawing more than a hundred tribal groups to the Eastern Highlands each September. Over a weekend the showground fills with sing-sing performers in full regalia, immense bird-of-paradise headdresses, ochre and charcoal face paint, shell ornaments and grass skirts, each group performing the songs and dances of its own clan to the pulse of kundu drums. Among the most striking are the Asaro Mudmen, who cover themselves in grey clay and wear grotesque moulded masks. Started in 1957 by Australian patrol officers to bring rival highland groups together in peaceful contest, the show now marks the country's Independence weekend and its seventieth edition falls in 2026. Held in the cool highland air of Goroka, it is the single richest window onto the cultural variety of Papua New Guinea, and the one most travellers build a trip around.

What to expect
The show is held over a weekend in mid-September, timed to the Independence Day weekend around 16 September; the 2026 edition, the seventieth, runs 18 to 20 September. Highland days are mild and can bring afternoon rain, so pack layers and rain protection. It is a ticketed, gated event, and the grand entrance on the first morning, when the groups pour onto the field together, is the highlight for viewing and photography.
Getting there & around
Goroka is reached by domestic flight from Port Moresby to Goroka Airport, or by road along the Highlands Highway from Mount Hagen or Lae, though flying is simplest. Accommodation is very limited for the show weekend and books out months ahead, so secure flights and a room early; many visitors come on an organised highlands tour that combines Goroka with the Mount Hagen Show in August and handles transfers, entry and security. Independent highland travel has security considerations, so a local operator or lodge is the usual route.
