Yoga Retreat in NosaraCR
A small Pacific beach town on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, accessible by dirt road. Home to consistent surf, year-round sun, and one of the world's most established destinations for yoga teacher training and long-stay retreat.
Why here
Nosara is one of the most intentional yoga towns on earth — it has actively resisted over-development through community land use agreements and, as a result, retains the jungle-road, howler-monkey, open-air-shala character that makes a month here qualitatively different from a city retreat. The Nosara Yoga Institute has offered teacher training since 1994, drawing practitioners who want depth alongside surf and Pacific sunsets. The Nicoya Peninsula''s Blue Zone status — one of five global zones with unusual longevity concentrations — adds a credibility layer to the wellness claims.
Best months
December through April is the dry season — reliably sunny, 28–34°C, with a consistent offshore breeze that keeps the heat manageable for outdoor practice. The rainy season (May–November) brings daily afternoon rain and lush jungle conditions; some retreat centres continue programmes year-round. The dirt roads into town become muddy during heavy rain. December to February is peak season with higher prices and fuller programmes.
Getting there & around
Fly into Liberia (LIR) or San José (SJO). From LIR, Nosara is approximately 2.5 hours by car; from SJO, approximately 4 hours. Rental cars are standard here — the area requires 4WD during rainy season. Small domestic flights from San José to Nosara (NSA airstrip) take 45 minutes and are popular for reducing travel time. Within Nosara, getting between the Playa Guiones beach zone and Pelada is easiest by bike or scooter.

Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort
Retreat centerA purpose-built yoga and wellness resort in Nosara, renovated in 2022 with saltwater pools, villas, spa, fitness centre, and a daily yoga programme across multiple styles. Bodhi Tree is the most hotel-like of Nosara's yoga offerings — it suits participants who want structured retreat programming with the comfort of a well-resourced resort property. Signature retreats combine yoga, surf lessons, and wellness treatments in week-long formats, and the proximity to Playa Guiones — one of Costa Rica's most consistent surf breaks — means non-yoga hours are well occupied. Popular with couples and participants with uneven activity interests.
Nosara Yoga Institute
Retreat centerOne of the longest-established Yoga Alliance-registered schools in the Americas, founded in Nosara in 1994 by Amba and Don Stapleton. The Institute offers 200-, 300-, and 500-hour teacher training programmes in open-air pavilions surrounded by Costa Rican jungle — the same campus it has operated since the beginning. Drop-in classes are open to the public daily. Nosara Yoga Institute's longevity in the same location, with the same pedagogical approach, gives it a credibility that newer retreat centres can't match: the teachers have depth, the lineage is traceable, and the community of graduates who return year after year provides a genuine testimonial.
The Harmony Hotel
Retreat centerA yoga-integrated boutique hotel on Playa Guiones with a dedicated healing centre, daily yoga classes, and a design ethos rooted in the Nicoya Blue Zone philosophy of natural movement and community. The Harmony Hotel's yoga offering is woven into the hotel experience rather than packaged as a separate retreat product: classes are included for guests, the restaurant serves locally-sourced Blue Zone-inspired food, and the beach is 50 metres from the yoga shala. An accessible entry point for first-time retreat participants who want the atmosphere of a yoga destination without a fully structured programme commitment.
