An oasis valley in Saudi Arabia's northwest, once a caravan stop on the incense road, whose sandstone cliffs hold the Nabataean tombs of Hegra, the ancient Dadanite and Lihyanite capital of Dadan, the rock-cut inscriptions of Jabal Ikmah and a restored mud-brick old town.
Why here
Hegra, also called Madain Salih, is the reason to come to AlUla. It was Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2008, and it holds more than one hundred monumental tombs that the Nabataeans carved into free-standing sandstone outcrops in the first century, the largest such collection outside their capital at Petra. You walk among facades crowned with eagles and sphinxes, read the weathered inscriptions above their doorways, and stand before the Tomb of Lihyan son of Kuza, a single unfinished giant marooned on its own rock. Access is only with a licensed rawi guide and by authorised coach, because private cars cannot enter the protected site, so this is a place you see slowly and in small groups. Pair it with nearby Dadan and the open-air inscription library of Jabal Ikmah for the fuller story of the valley.
Best months
The comfortable season runs from October to March, when daytime temperatures are mild and the low winter sun rakes across the tomb facades. Summer is severe, regularly above 40 degrees, and several experiences pause. Hegra is open daily but sells out in peak winter and around festival periods, so book the guided tour ahead through the official Experience AlUla platform.
Getting there & around
AlUla has its own airport with direct flights from Riyadh, Jeddah and some seasonal international routes, plus a longer road approach from Medina. All Hegra visits start at the Winter Park visitor centre, where you join a small group with a rawi guide and transfer in by authorised coach. Book the guided tour in advance on experiencealula.com, wear closed shoes and sun protection, and allow a full day to add Dadan and Jabal Ikmah.
