A ninth-century monastery on a gorge rim, reached by the world's longest reversible aerial tramway, 5,752 meters over the Vorotan.

Why here

Wings of Tatev is the world's longest reversible aerial tramway built in a single section, 5,752 meters strung across the Vorotan Gorge, and the twelve-minute crossing is the point as much as the destination: the cabin hangs over a three-hundred-meter drop before delivering you to the ninth-century Tatev Monastery on its basalt rim. Built by Doppelmayr and opened in October 2010 with a Guinness record, the line runs as a non-profit under the Tatev Revival program, its fares funding the monastery complex's restoration. The monastery itself held one of medieval Armenia's great universities; the gorge held everything else out.

April to November for reliable running; winter service depends on wind. Ride early for morning light down the gorge and to beat tour-bus waves. The old gorge road makes a white-knuckle alternative descent.

Moderate logistics

Tatev is four hours from Yerevan on the Goris road; the tramway base is at Halidzor. Pairs with the Areni wine row for the classic Syunik run.
