Why here
Nu Boyana Film Studios is the Hollywood of the Balkans, the working studio where 300, The Expendables, Hellboy, Rambo V, and three hundred other productions have shot since 1962, and it runs a real public tour: three hours through thirteen stops of full-scale backlot, a Roman forum, New York streets, London complete with a St Paul's replica, the underwater stage, for fifty leva with a minimum group of ten. The honesty is the charm: this is not a theme park, sets get swapped mid-tour when a production needs them, and on the right day you walk past a live shoot. Nowhere else in Europe puts a visitor this close to the industrial machinery of blockbuster filmmaking at pocket-money prices.
Best months
Year-round on weekdays, subject to filming schedules; book by email or phone ahead, in English or Bulgarian. The ten-person minimum means solo travelers join or assemble a group. Sets change with productions, which is the point.
Getting there & around
The studio sits in Boyana at Sofia's edge, twenty minutes from the center by taxi. Combine with the UNESCO Boyana Church nearby and Vitosha's trails above.
