Cup Match
The oldest continuously inhabited English town in the New World, founded in 1612 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, at Bermuda's East End. Its lanes of colonial cottages, St. Peter's Church and the town square carry four centuries of Atlantic history, and every summer it is one of the two homes of the Cup Match holiday.

Why here
Cup Match is Bermuda's biggest cultural event, a two-day cricket festival that is really a celebration of emancipation and identity. It grew out of the gatherings held by formerly enslaved Bermudians to mark the end of slavery in 1834, and since 1902 it has taken the form of an annual cricket match between the East End club, St. George's, and the West End club, Somerset, played over the two days before the first Monday of August. Those two days are a national public holiday, Emancipation Day and Mary Prince Day, and the whole island effectively stops. The venue alternates each year between the two clubs' grounds, and whichever end is hosting fills with tents, food stalls selling fish sandwiches and mussel pie, families in the colours of their team, and the distinctive gaming tables of Crown and Anchor, the one time and place gambling is openly allowed on the island. The cricket is fiercely contested and deeply followed, but the point is the gathering: three or four generations together, calypso and reggae, and a shared memory of freedom. For a visitor it is the truest window into Bermudian life there is, far from the pink-sand-and-cruise-ship image, and everyone is welcome to come and take it in.

Cup Match falls on the Thursday and Friday before the first Monday in August every year, a two-day public holiday, so plan around late July or the very start of August. It is an outdoor summer event, hot and busy, held at whichever club is hosting that year, alternating between St. George's in the East End and Somerset in the West End. Entry to the grounds is inexpensive; bring sun protection, cash for the food stalls and Crown and Anchor, and patience for the island-wide crowds and full ferries. Upcoming: 30 to 31 July 2026 and 29 to 30 July 2027.
Getting there & around
Cup Match is held at whichever host club has the fixture that year: the St. George's Cricket Club at the UNESCO-listed East End town, or the Somerset Cricket Club at the West End, each about 45 minutes from the other and reachable by bus or ferry from Hamilton. Bermuda allows no rental cars for visitors, and the roads and ferries are packed over the holiday, so use public buses, the ferries and taxis, and check which end is hosting before you set out.
