Witness / Attend in SienaIT
A medieval hill city in Tuscany and the site of the Palio di Siena, one of the most intense and authentic local events in Europe. The bareback horse race around the Piazza del Campo on July 2 and August 16 is not a tourist event but a living expression of the city's contrade rivalry that has run continuously since the 17th century.
Why here
The Palio di Siena is not a performance put on for tourists. It is a horse race that the citizens of Siena run for themselves, with a ferocity of local rivalry between the seventeen contrade (city districts) that has not diminished in 400 years. The race itself lasts 90 seconds around the Piazza del Campo, a three-lap bareback sprint on a dirt track laid over the medieval brick square. Jockeys can be bribed, horses can be bought, and alliances between contrade shift in the days before the race in a political maneuvering that is as much the point as the race itself. To watch it is to watch a city reveal something about itself that tourism usually obscures. The Piazza holds 30,000 standing spectators for free; the best windows and balconies surrounding it are rented to visitors.
Best months
Two races per year: July 2 (Palio di Provenzano) and August 16 (Palio dell'Assunta). The July race is hotter and often more volatile in terms of conditions on the track. The days immediately before the race feature trial runs (prove) in the Piazza twice daily, which are also worth watching and have no ticketing requirement. The Piazza fills from the early afternoon on race day; arrive by noon for a good standing position in the center (campo).
Getting there & around
Fly into Florence (FLR) or Pisa (PSA), both around 90 minutes from Siena. Train connections exist but Siena station is not in the center; a bus or taxi completes the journey. Siena accommodations are limited; Florence is the easier base with regular bus services to Siena. Window and balcony tickets around the Piazza are sold through licensed agencies and fill months in advance for both race dates. The trial races (prove) are free, standing on the Piazza, and give a full experience of the event atmosphere without the accommodation crunch. No visa for Schengen nationals.
