The Bahrain Grand Prix is the reason to be in Sakhir. When it opened in 2004 the Bahrain International Circuit was the first Formula 1 venue in the Middle East, and it has since become one of the sport's fixtures, running for several years as the season opener and, since 2014, as a floodlit night race across the desert. The 5.4 kilometre track was laid out by the circuit architect Hermann Tilke through the dunes south of Manama, with long straights and heavy braking zones that make it a genuine overtaking circuit. Race weekend turns the whole site into a festival, with support series, concerts in the fan zone and grandstands packed under the lights. For a traveller it is a rare chance to watch top-level motorsport in an intimate, walkable venue where the paddock and the desert sit side by side, a very different scale from the old European circuits.

The Grand Prix is held once a year, in recent seasons over a weekend in early-to-mid April, run in the evening and into the night under floodlights when the desert has cooled. The full timetable of practice, qualifying and the race, plus support races and concerts, is published in the weeks before. Grandstand and hospitality tickets for the main days sell out, so book ahead. The 2026 running was disrupted by regional tensions; confirm the current calendar before planning around a date.

US State Dept Level 3 Reconsider Travel (as of 2026-07), heightened regional tensions after the February 2026 US-Iran hostilities, with periodic Gulf airspace closures and flight disruptions; check your government's current advisory before booking. The circuit is in Sakhir, about 30 to 40 minutes south of Manama by taxi or ride-hail, with shuttle services on race days. Bahrain International Airport on Muharraq is well connected and the country is compact, so most visitors stay in Manama and travel out to the track. Buy tickets only through the official Bahrain International Circuit channel, and plan transport back to the city for the late finish.
