Why here

Plovdiv stages opera in a working second-century Roman theatre carved into its hillside, and the Opera Open summer season is the cheapest ticket in Europe to that particular sublime: Nabucco, Carmen, and star recitals, the 2026 bill includes Sonya Yoncheva, under open sky in a city that has been continuously inhabited longer than any other on the continent. Around the theatre spreads the old town's Revival-era mansions and the Kapana creative quarter, whose galleries, studios, and street tables carry the evening after the curtain. As a culture-first city break with an ancient stage at its center, nothing in the Balkans matches it.

The Opera Open season runs late June to early September at the Ancient Theatre, June 23 to September 9 in 2026; star nights sell out ahead, ordinary performances walk up. Summer evenings are warm; the stone seats want a cushion.
