Paro Tshechu
A broad western valley of terraced rice fields and old farmhouses, home to Bhutan's only international airport, the fortress of Rinpung Dzong and the cliffside Taktsang monastery. Paro is the usual entry point to the kingdom and the base for its most famous walk and its spring tshechu.
No overall organizer. Zhung Dratshang (Central Monastic Body of Bhutan) anchors the event; the rest belongs to the streets.

Why here
Paro Tshechu is the great spring festival of western Bhutan, five days of sacred masked dance in and around Rinpung Dzong, the fortress above the Paro river. Monks and lay dancers perform the cham cycles that recount the life of Guru Rinpoche and the victory of dharma, while the valley's families gather in ceremonial dress for what is as much a social reunion as a religious rite. The festival is famous for its finale: before dawn on the last day a giant silk applique thongdrel, one of the largest in the country and showing Guru Rinpoche, is unrolled down the dzong wall for only a few hours, and pilgrims file past to receive its blessing before the sun can touch it. It is Bhutan's most accessible major tshechu, close to the airport and set against a classic Himalayan valley.
Best months
The festival dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar, falling in the second lunar month, which lands in late March or April. In 2026 it runs 29 March to 2 April, with the pre-dawn thongdrel unfurling on the closing day. Spring days are mild and the valley is green, but the dzong courtyard and the thongdrel crowd fill early, so the dawn viewing means a very early start. Bring layers for the cold morning and sun cover for the afternoon dances.
Getting there & around
Rinpung Dzong sits just above Paro town, minutes from Bhutan's only international airport. Because travel is guided-only, you attend with a licensed operator who arranges dzong access, times the days around the dance and thongdrel schedule and handles the early start for the closing morning, and you pay the Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100 per adult per night (the 2026 rate, in force to August 2027) on top of tour costs. Spring is peak season, so book the tour and rooms several months ahead.
