Mount Hagen Cultural Show
The capital of Western Highlands Province and the third-largest city in Papua New Guinea, set in a fertile highland valley at around 1,700 meters. A market and gateway town for the highlands, it is best known for the Mount Hagen Cultural Show, one of the country's two great sing-sing gatherings.

The Mount Hagen Cultural Show is one of the two great highland sing-sings of Papua New Guinea, staged over a weekend each August at Queen's Park in Mount Hagen. More than a hundred tribal groups gather to perform, each in full ceremonial dress: towering headdresses of bird-of-paradise plumes, faces painted in clan colors, bodies oiled and shell-decorated, moving to the beat of kundu drums in a mass of sound and color. The show began in 1961, before independence, as a way to bring rival highland clans together in peaceful display rather than conflict, and it keeps that spirit, a stage where hundreds of distinct cultures show themselves side by side. For a visitor it is the single best chance to see the sheer diversity of highland Papua New Guinea in one place, and the friendly rivalry with the Goroka Show a month later only sharpens the performances.
Best months
The show is held on a weekend in mid-August, usually the third weekend; the 2026 edition runs 14 to 16 August at Queen's Park. Days are warm and can be wet in the afternoons at highland altitude, so bring sun cover and rain gear. It is a ticketed, gated event; arrive early for the morning grand entrance when the groups march in, which is the strongest part of the day for photography.
Getting there & around
Mount Hagen is reached by daily domestic flights from Port Moresby to Kagamuga Airport, a short drive from Queen's Park where the show is held. Book flights and accommodation months ahead, as beds in Hagen are limited and fill for the show weekend; many visitors come on an organized highlands tour that pairs Hagen with the Goroka Show and covers transfers and show entry. Independent travel in the highlands has security considerations, so most travelers use a local operator or lodge.
