Maltese Village Festa

Why here
The Maltese festa is the beating heart of village life, and in summer there is one almost every weekend somewhere across Malta and Gozo. Each town spends the year preparing to honour its patron saint, and over a long weekend the streets fill with damask hangings and illuminated facades, brass band clubs march and play, a gilded statue of the saint is carried shoulder-high through the parish, and rival fireworks societies fire deafening ground petards by day and elaborate aerial shows by night. It is run entirely by volunteers, with a friendly, fierce rivalry between neighbouring villages and between the band clubs within them. UNESCO added the Maltese village festa to its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2023. There is no ticket and no promoter to book. You follow the crowd, the bands and the church bells into the square.
Best months
The festa season runs from late April to early October and peaks on summer weekends, with the biggest feasts, and the loudest fireworks, in July and August. Celebrations build over several days and climax on the Sunday of the feast with the procession and the main firework display. Expect dense crowds, extreme heat by day and very loud petards, so bring water and ear protection and keep well back from firing areas.
Getting there & around
Village feasts happen all over Malta and Gozo, so almost any summer visit will catch one, and local listings and parish pages publish the weekend dates. Villages are reachable by bus, but roads and parking near the parish close during the procession and fireworks. A few marquee feasts to aim for are Mnarja at Nadur on Gozo around 29 June and the large July and August feasts in towns such as Zabbar, Zebbug and Xewkija. There is nothing to reserve; the celebration is in the street.
