Why here
Vincy Mas is the national carnival of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the biggest event on the country's calendar. Unlike the pre-Lenten carnivals of much of the Caribbean, it runs across the last days of June into the first week of July, a roughly two-week build of shows and competitions in and around Kingstown that peaks on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. The heart of it is the music, the calypso and soca monarch competitions, the steel pan and the mas: J'Ouvert before dawn, then the Parade of the Bands through the capital in full costume, along with the Miss SVG pageant and the King and Queen of the Bands. It grew from older street traditions into a modern carnival that draws the diaspora home, and it is a genuine national celebration rather than a tourist show. For a traveller it is the deepest, loudest look at Vincentian culture, staged free in the streets of the capital.
Best months
A roughly two-week carnival season across late June and early July, centred on Kingstown and climaxing with J'Ouvert and the Parade of the Bands on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, which are public holidays. This is the start of the wetter season, so expect heat, humidity and passing showers. Street events and parades are free to watch; ticketed shows such as the calypso and soca finals and the pageants are sold separately. The capital is at its busiest, so book flights and rooms months ahead.
Getting there & around
The carnival centres on Kingstown, with shows at Victoria Park and parades through the capital, all reachable on foot once you are in town; Argyle International Airport is a short drive away. Most street events and parades are free; set-piece competitions and fetes are ticketed by the Carnival Development Corporation and private promoters. Accommodation on Saint Vincent fills over the carnival weeks, so reserve early and confirm the current schedule before travelling.
