Jokkmokk Winter Market
A small town on the Arctic Circle in the Sami heartland of Swedish Lapland, seat of the Ajtte Sami museum. Each February it hosts Jokkmokks Marknad, a winter market with a four-hundred-year unbroken tradition and one of the great gatherings of Sami culture, held on the first Thursday to Saturday of the month.

Jokkmokks Marknad, the Jokkmokk Winter Market, is the oldest and most important gathering of the year in Sapmi, the Sami homeland, and one of the most extraordinary things to witness anywhere in the Arctic. Held on the first Thursday to Saturday of February on the Arctic Circle, it has run in an unbroken line for four hundred years, since the Swedish crown fixed permanent marketplaces near the Sami winter settlements in the early 17th century to trade, tax and hold court. Today it draws tens of thousands into a town of a few thousand, in deep cold that often sits below minus thirty, for stalls of Sami handicraft and duodji, reindeer meat and hides, joik singing, reindeer-caravan displays and the reindeer race on the frozen lake. It is at once a living market, a reunion of reindeer-herding families and a proud assertion of Sami identity, anchored by the Ajtte museum in the town. To stand among the stalls and the woodsmoke, wrapped against the cold while joik carries across the square, is to witness an indigenous tradition that has survived four centuries intact.

The market is held once a year on the first Thursday to Saturday of February, with the market area open 10:00 to 18:00 and events, concerts and exhibitions across the whole week and into the evenings. This is the deep Arctic winter: expect extreme cold, often below minus thirty, short daylight and strong aurora odds at night, so dress in serious layers with insulated boots and mitts. It is free to walk the market. The 2027 edition, the 422nd, falls on 4 to 6 February; the 2028 edition is expected in early February.
Getting there & around
Jokkmokk lies inland in Swedish Lapland, reached by bus or car from Lulea, which has the nearest airport and train station, about two hours away, or from Gallivare. Accommodation for the market is scarce and books out a year ahead across the whole area, so reserve very early or stay in a nearby town and travel in. The market is free to attend; guided cultural packages, dog-sled tours and Sami visits are run by local operators. Bring extreme cold-weather clothing. The Ajtte Sami museum is open alongside the market.
