Witness / Attend in HueVN
Vietnam's former imperial capital on the Perfume River, home to the Nguyen dynasty citadel, royal tombs, and the country's most refined culinary tradition. Its city-run festival turns the imperial heritage into a live stage.
Why here
The Hue Festival is Vietnam's flagship cultural festival, staged by the city government in and around the Nguyen dynasty citadel: royal court music (itself UNESCO-listed), costumed re-enactments of imperial ceremonies, night openings of the citadel, and international performing troupes on riverside stages. Unlike a community festival, this one is a produced event with a published program and dates, which makes it the easiest serious cultural event in Vietnam to plan around. It also fixes the classic Hue problem: the imperial monuments can feel like a museum on an ordinary day, and the festival is when they come back to life.
Best months
Traditionally biennial, the festival moved to a year-round, four-season format in 2026, with headline weeks rather than one block: the 2026 main opening ran March 25 to April 7, and the International Arts Festival Week June 13-18. Editions change shape year to year, so check the city's published program before planning. March and April are Hue's most comfortable window; September through December is the central coast's rainy season.
Getting there & around
Fly into Hue (HUI) or into Da Nang (DAD) and drive two hours over the Hai Van pass, one of Vietnam's great coastal roads. The citadel, riverfront stages, and most venues sit within a compact core, walkable or a short taxi apart. Headline weeks fill hotels, so book a few weeks ahead; most outdoor performances are free, with ticketed shows inside the citadel.
