Why here
The Galicnik Wedding is the Balkans' most famous village festival: each July, on the weekend nearest St. Peter's Day, one real couple marries in the full three-day Mijak rite in a stone village at 1,400 meters on Bistra mountain, with drums and zurla pipes, the grave-visiting procession for the village's absent and dead, the bride's water-carrying walk, and the men's teskoto dance that carries the weight of a century of economic exile. The village is nearly empty the rest of the year, which is the point: the wedding is the annual return, staged for the community itself with thousands of guests welcome to watch. The 2026 edition runs July 10-12.
Best months
Annual, the weekend nearest July 12: the 2026 edition runs July 10-12. The mountain road is narrow and parking is controlled on festival days, so arrive early or use shuttle arrangements from Mavrovo. High-summer sun at altitude; the program is outdoors.
Getting there & around
