Echternach Hopping Procession
The oldest town in Luxembourg, on the Sure river at the German border and the gateway to the Mullerthal. Grown around the abbey founded by Saint Willibrord in 698, it is famous for the Echternach Hopping Procession, a dancing pilgrimage on Whit Tuesday listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

The Echternach Hopping Procession, the Sprangpressioun, is one of the last dancing processions in Europe and the single most distinctive thing to witness in Luxembourg. Every Whit Tuesday, the Tuesday after Pentecost, thousands of pilgrims move through the oldest town in the country in linked rows, stepping and swaying from side to side to a simple looping polka melody played by dozens of bands, dancing their way toward the tomb of Saint Willibrord in the basilica. The tradition honours Willibrord, the Northumbrian monk who founded the abbey here in 698 and was revered as a healer, and it has been carried on for centuries as an act of faith and thanksgiving. In 2010 UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Standing in the medieval streets as row after row of dancers passes to that hypnotic tune, tens of thousands of them over several hours, is a singular experience, solemn and joyful at once, and it is free to watch.

The procession is held once a year on Whit Tuesday, the Tuesday after Pentecost, so the date moves with the Christian calendar between mid-May and mid-June. It runs through the morning in the centre of Echternach, ending at the Basilica of Saint Willibrord, and draws tens of thousands of participants and onlookers. Watching from the streets is free; arrive early for a place along the route and expect road closures and full car parks. The next editions fall on 18 May 2027 and around 6 June 2028.
Getting there & around
Echternach is about 30 minutes from Luxembourg City by the free national buses or by car, and on procession day it is easiest reached by bus or park-and-ride because the centre is closed to traffic. The procession is free to watch from the streets; no ticket is needed. Book accommodation in Echternach or nearby Mullerthal villages well ahead for the Whit weekend, and combine the visit with the Mullerthal Trail, which starts in the town.

OrganizerThe Willibrordus-Bauverein is the Echternach association that organises the Hopping Procession each Whit Tuesday, forming the groups of pilgrims and musicians who dance through the town toward the tomb of Saint Willibrord in the basilica. It maintains the cult of Willibrord, the Northumbrian monk who founded the Abbey of Echternach in 698 and is buried in its crypt. The procession has been on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage since 2010.
