Why here

The Carnival of Barranquilla is where the Caribbean, Andean, and African threads of Colombian culture braid into one four-day street party, big enough that only Rio outdoes it on this continent and distinctive enough that UNESCO inscribed it among humanity's intangible heritage. The Battle of the Flowers parade opens it, marimonda masks and cumbia troupes carry it, and the whole city dances until the symbolic burial of Joselito closes it on Tuesday. Unlike Rio, it stays approachable: parade seats are affordable, the crowd is overwhelmingly Colombian, and visitors get pulled into the dancing rather than roped off from it.

The carnival runs the four days before Ash Wednesday, so dates move with Lent: February 6-9 in 2027, with pre-carnival events building through January. Later editions shift within February and early March; confirm the year's dates before booking. Expect Caribbean heat, all-day sun on the parade routes, and a city fully given over to the party.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Barranquilla (BAQ) or into Cartagena, two hours away by road, where many visitors base. Book rooms and parade grandstand seats (palcos) one to three months ahead; the four days sell the city out. The Batalla de Flores on Saturday is the essential parade, and a local guide or Colombian friends transform the experience from spectator to participant.
