Wine / Spirits Education in TikvesMK
North Macedonia's wine heartland on Rioja's latitude, where Vranec is poured beside Roman ruins and under the Iron Gate canyon.
Why here
Tikves holds roughly eighty percent of North Macedonia's wineries on the same latitude band as Rioja, with a wine culture dating to the fourth century BC and Vranec as its flagship red. The education is estate-led and blissfully uncrowded: Popova Kula at Demir Kapija runs guided cellar tours and tastings of twenty wines from eleven varieties, including the rescued local Stanushina grape, with a wine hotel on site under the Iron Gate canyon; Stobi Winery pours beside the ruins of the ancient Roman city it is named for, teaching the basics of wine technology on its cellar tours. Prices are a fraction of Western Europe's and international visitors are still a novelty, which is precisely the moment to go.
Best months
April to June and September to October are the seasons, with the September harvest and the grape-harvest festival in Kavadarci as the cultural peak. Tastings run 15-30 euros by reservation; the Popova Kula hotel makes an overnight easy.
Getting there & around
An hour to ninety minutes south of Skopje on the A1. A car covers both estates in a day; staying at Popova Kula removes the driving question entirely.
