Why here
Ningxia is where Chinese fine wine grew up. On the stony, sun-baked eastern foot of the Helan Mountains, on the edge of the Gobi, roughly two hundred wineries now make serious Bordeaux-style reds and, increasingly, whites, enough to earn the region the Bordeaux of the East tag and a string of international medals. Visiting is a chance to taste and learn at the source, from boutique pioneers to grand new estates, and to understand the extremes behind the wine: vines buried by hand under earth each winter to survive temperatures that would otherwise kill them, then unearthed in spring. Silver Heights, the family winery Emma Gao brought back from Bordeaux, and Kanaan, where Wang Fang makes a startling Riesling, are among the names that put Ningxia on the map. Tastings are by appointment, so plan ahead.
Best months
The vineyards are most alive from late spring through the September and October harvest, when the estates are working and the mountains make a clear backdrop. Winters are severe and the vines lie buried, so most wineries visit best in the warmer half of the year. Almost all tours and tastings are by prior appointment rather than walk-in.
Getting there & around
The wineries spread along the Helan Mountain foothills near Yinchuan, the Ningxia capital, which has an airport and rail links. Estates are scattered and not walkable between, so a car and driver or an organized winery tour is the practical way to string several together. Book each visit ahead.

Kanaan Winery
OutfitterKanaan Winery sits at the eastern foot of the Helan Mountains in Ningxia, founded in 2011 by Wang Fang, a Chinese-German vintner known in wine circles as Crazy Fang who trained and lived in Germany before bringing German winemakers back with her. The estate is best known for its Riesling and its Pretty Pony Cabernet blend, praised by critics including Jancis Robinson.
Silver Heights
OutfitterFounded by winemaker Emma Gao, Silver Heights is one of the pioneering boutique wineries of Ningxia's Helan Mountain East, the high-desert region that put Chinese wine on the map. Trained in Bordeaux and working a small family estate, Gao makes structured red blends that were among the first Chinese wines to win international attention, and the winery receives visitors by arrangement.
