Wine / Spirits Education in Luxembourg Moselle

Luxembourg · Western Europe

The 42-kilometre stretch of the Moselle along Luxembourg's south-eastern border, from Schengen through Remich and Wormeldange to Grevenmacher, a narrow band of steep riverside vineyards that is the Grand Duchy's only wine region and the home of Cremant de Luxembourg.

Why here

Luxembourg's Moselle is one of Europe's quiet wine surprises, a compact 42-kilometre river frontier where steep terraces of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois and Rivaner face the water and almost none of the bottles ever leave the country. The signature is Cremant de Luxembourg, a traditional-method sparkling wine with its own protected appellation since 1991, and the place to understand it is the row of cellars from Wormeldange to Grevenmacher. This is wine study at an approachable scale: you can walk into a working cave, follow the whole traditional method from press to riddling to disgorgement, and taste across a producer's range in an afternoon, with none of the appointment-only formality of the bigger regions across the borders. Between tastings the Cremant circular walk zig-zags up through the vineyards, and the terraces give long views over the river into Germany.

The cellars run guided visits and tastings year-round, with the fullest programme and outdoor terrace tastings from April to October and harvest through September and October. The vineyard walks show best in the same warm window. Winter trades vineyard time for cellar visits. Weekends and public holidays are busy at the larger houses, so tours are best reserved ahead; some estates open only by appointment out of season.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

The wine towns of Remich, Wormeldange and Grevenmacher sit 25 to 40 minutes east of Luxembourg City and are reached by the free national buses, though a car or the riverside cycle path makes cellar-hopping easier. The villages line a single road along the west bank, so several cellars and the Cremant circular walk can be linked in a day. Tastings are inexpensive by regional standards; book cellar tours ahead at weekends. River boats run between the wine towns in summer.

Domaines Vinsmoselle

Outfitter

Domaines Vinsmoselle is Luxembourg's largest wine producer, a century-old cooperative of the Moselle's winegrowing families that accounts for a majority of the country's output. Its Art Deco Caves de Wormeldange are the birthplace of Cremant de Luxembourg and the home of the Poll-Fabaire label. The cooperative runs guided visits and tastings of its wines and Cremants year-round across five vinotheques along the Moselle, and holds Fair'N Green sustainability certification.
