The Krasochoria, literally the wine villages, are where Cypriot wine is easiest to learn at the source, on the southern slopes of Troodos above Limassol. This is the home of Commandaria, a sweet wine made from sun-dried Xynisteri and Mavro grapes that is credited as the oldest named wine still made anywhere, its recipe traced back to antiquity and a name given by the Knights of the Templar Commandery. The story here is not French but Cypriot: aromatic native whites like Xynisteri and Promara, and reds from Mavro and the rediscovered Maratheftiko, grown on terraces high enough to escape the phylloxera that reshaped European vineyards. A weekend up here moves between old stone villages such as Omodos and Koilani, each with cellars worked by the same families for generations, and a handful of boutique estates that sit you down for a structured tasting and walk you through how the wines are grown and made. You taste across a dozen producers without driving far.
Best months
The cellars pour year round, but late spring and the September to October harvest are the times to see the vineyards working, and autumn brings the making of Commandaria as the grapes are laid out to dry. Serious tastings are seated and best booked ahead rather than walked into, especially at the smaller family estates. Weekends are busier in the villages; weekdays give you the winemaker's full attention. Mountain roads are narrow and winding, so plan a driver given the tasting.
Getting there & around
The wine villages sit 30 to 60 minutes up into the hills from Limassol, with Omodos, Koilani and Pelendri common bases and easy to combine over a day or two. A car or a booked wine-route tour is close to essential for reaching estates spread among the vineyards, and it is worth arranging a driver so everyone can taste. Cellar tours and structured tastings run by appointment at the boutique wineries, so confirm times before setting out, and note that many village tavernas serve the local wines with meze.

Ayia Mavri Winery
