Wine / Spirits Education in Kentucky Bourbon CountryUS
The Louisville-Bardstown corridor where about 95 percent of the world's bourbon is made, with the industry's only recognized certification taught at the source.
Why here
Wine education has a dozen world capitals; bourbon has one. The spirit is legally American and about 95 percent of it is made in Kentucky, so the Louisville-Bardstown corridor is not a version of this experience, it is the experience. The education is real: Stave and Thief Society is the Kentucky Distillers' Association's official program and the industry's only recognized bourbon certification, taught up to Executive Bourbon Steward in a full-day course at Louisville's Distilled Spirits Epicenter, with a working distillery attached. The Bourbon Trail then turns theory into an itinerary across 40-plus distilleries, from Maker's Mark's dipping room to Buffalo Trace's warehouses, with certified guides doing the driving.
Best months
Year-round; April to June and September to October are the pleasant seasons, and September is Bourbon Heritage Month. Tastings are involved everywhere, so guided transport is part of the plan, not a luxury. Book distillery experiences ahead in the fall.
Getting there & around
Fly to Louisville (SDF); the distilleries spread over about a 90-minute radius. Certification courses book weeks ahead; distillery tours in fall book further out.
