Wine / Spirits Education in GarzonUY
A village in the hills behind Punta del Este, home of Bodega Garzon, ranked among the top vineyards in the world. Uruguay's Tannat and Atlantic Albarino, taught at the estate.
Why here
Uruguay is the world capital of Tannat, and Bodega Garzon is the estate the wine world actually ranks: fourth in the World's Best Vineyards 2025 after years in the top ten, a gravity-flow winery under 7,000 square meters of green roof, with sommelier-led tastings, blending sessions, and lunches at its Francis Mallmann restaurant. The Albarino grown 18 kilometers from the Atlantic is the quiet second act. Visitor volumes are a fraction of Mendoza's, so tastings run semi-private by default, and harvest, February through April, puts you in the rows. Carmelo's old-vine estates on the Rio de la Plata, Narbona first among them, extend the education westward.
Best months
Visits run year-round; October through April is the pleasant season and February through April adds harvest experiences. Book morning or afternoon estate slots; the blending and harvest programs want more notice than a tasting.
Getting there & around
Fly to Punta del Este (PDP), 40 minutes away, or Montevideo (MVD), about 2.5 hours; a car is essential. Book experiences one to four weeks ahead in high season.
