Wine / Spirits Education in Casablanca ValleyCL

Chile's cool-climate coastal valley between Santiago and Valparaiso, where morning fog off the Pacific shapes Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Why here

Casablanca rewrote Chilean wine in the 1980s. Before the first Sauvignon Blanc went into this ground in 1982, Chile meant warm-valley reds; the fog and cool afternoons rolling in off the Humboldt Current made the country's first serious cool-climate whites and Pinot Noir possible. Casas del Bosque, voted among the world's 50 best vineyards to visit, runs structured tastings and blending workshops above its Sauvignon Blanc blocks. Emiliana, the world's largest organic winery, walks visitors through biodynamic viticulture with alpacas grazing between the rows. Paired with Colchagua's reds further south, it completes the Chilean picture: whites and Pinot in the fog, Carmenere and Cabernet in the sun.

Tasting rooms operate year-round. Harvest runs February into April and is the liveliest period; spring, October to December, brings green vineyards and fewer buses. Summer mornings often start under coastal fog that burns off by midday, which is exactly what keeps the whites taut. Most wineries want advance booking for tours, especially on weekends.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

The valley straddles Route 68 about an hour from both Santiago and Valparaiso. A rental car is easiest; buses stop in Casablanca town and several wineries arrange transfers. A morning tasting pairs naturally with an afternoon in Valparaiso.
