Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in San GilCO
A small city in Santander canyon country, Colombia's official adventure sports capital. Three rivers of different grades converge on the town, headlined by the Class IV-V rapids of the Rio Suarez.
Why here
San Gil is where Colombia keeps its whitewater: three rivers at three grades within a short drive, so the town works like a ladder. The gentle Rio Fonce runs through San Gil itself for first-timers, and the Rio Suarez delivers the main event, big-volume Class IV-V rapids through a hot canyon that ranks with South America's best commercial runs. The town has run adventure tourism for two decades, guides on the Suarez carry international certifications, and the surrounding canyon country stacks paragliding, caving, and the cobbled colonial town of Barichara for the days your arms need a rest.
Best months
Rafting runs year-round on rain-fed rivers; the Suarez is at its most powerful in the wetter months around April-May and October-November, and more technical at lower water in the December-March and June-August dry windows. Operators assess levels daily and the Fonce almost always runs regardless. The canyon is hot and low-altitude; sun protection matters more than warmth.
Getting there & around
Fly into Bucaramanga (BGA) and drive about two and a half hours, or take the six-to-seven-hour bus from Bogota. Trips book a day or two ahead in town; the Suarez run requires previous rafting experience or a warm-up on the Fonce, which operators will insist on. Weekends bring Colombian tourists; midweek the rivers are near-empty.
