A protected stretch of free-flowing rapids on the Lieksanjoki near Lieksa in North Karelia, eastern Finland, close to the Russian border. The Ruunaa recreation area threads a chain of six named rapids through boreal forest, laced with hiking trails, hanging bridges and campfire shelters, and is the best base for rapids-running in southern Finland.

Ruunaa is the best whitewater in southern Finland, a run of free-flowing rapids on the Lieksanjoki where the river drops through a chain of six named rapids in a protected stretch of North Karelian forest. This is not steep alpine whitewater but classic Finnish rapids-running: wide, powerful grade one to two water shot in long traditional wooden boats or in inflatable rafts, with enough push and standing waves to soak and thrill a boatload without technical risk, which makes it a great family and first-timer adventure. The rapids sit inside the Ruunaa hiking and recreation area, laced with trails, hanging bridges, lean-to shelters and campfire spots, so a rafting trip pairs naturally with a walk, a swim and a smoke sauna on the riverbank. Local operators run guided descents through the summer and into the autumn colours, with the wooden-boat trip the traditional way to do it.
Best months
The rafting season runs from about May to October, once the ice is gone, with peak water and warmth in high summer and quieter, colourful trips in the autumn ruska. The rapids are grade one to two, powerful but not technical, and suit families and beginners under guiding; you will get wet, so operators provide waterproofs and lifejackets. Getting there & around
Ruunaa lies about 30 kilometres north-east of Lieksa in North Karelia, near the Russian border. The usual approach is via Joensuu, which has an airport and rail link from Helsinki, then road to Lieksa and on to the Ruunaa area at Pankakoski; the operators cluster near the rapids and river bridges. Trips include transfer from the meeting point to the put-in. The recreation area has huts, campfire sites and marked trails for combining rafting with hiking.

OutfitterKoski-Jaakko runs rapids-shooting trips on the Ruunaa rapids from May to October, taking guests down the chain of Paasikoski, Haapakoski, Neitikoski, Kattilakoski, Murrookoski and Siikakoski by traditional wooden boat or inflatable raft on routes of roughly eight to thirty kilometres. Trips finish with campfire meals of smoked salmon and Karelian dishes and the option of a wood-heated smoke sauna. It is a small, long-standing local operator on the Naarajoki.
