Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in Pacuare RiverCR

A rainforest-walled Class III-IV river on Costa Rica's Caribbean slope, routinely ranked among the best rafting rivers in the world. Waterfalls drop straight into the run, and jungle lodges along the banks turn a day trip into a two- or three-day float.

Why here

The Pacuare earns its reputation honestly: nineteen miles of continuous Class III-IV whitewater through a gorge so steep the only way in or out for most of it is the river itself. Waterfalls feed directly into rapids, howler monkeys call from the canopy, and the rainforest never breaks for the length of the run. It is technical enough to satisfy paddlers who have outgrown gentler rivers, but the major outfitters run it daily with safety kayakers and rescue-trained guides, so a fit beginner with some water confidence can do it too. Multi-day trips with riverside lodges turn it from an adrenaline morning into an actual immersion, which is rare for a rapid this good.

The Pacuare is dam-free and rain-fed, so it runs year-round, but character shifts with the season. June through December is high water: bigger, pushier rapids and the most exciting version of the river. January through April drops to a lower, more technical flow, still a legitimate Class III-IV trip but with more rock-dodging and less raw volume. Afternoon rain is normal most of the year; mornings tend to be clearer.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Access is via Turrialba, about a two- to three-hour drive from San Jose; most outfitters include transport in the trip price and pick up directly from San Jose hotels. One-day trips are the standard offering, but two- and three-day versions with a riverside lodge stay are worth the extra time if your schedule allows it. Book at least a few days ahead in high season (December-April tourist season, not to be confused with the river's own high-water months).
